Millions of transactions in the ticketing and access system, but limited options for fast business analysis: That was the challenge facing Dachstein Salzkammergut cable cars. Together with BE-terna, the company built a centralized analytics platform based on Qlik Cloud that brings together sales, access, and ride data from SKIDATA, enriches it with business context, and makes it available for management, controlling, and operations. Today, users can analyze more than 50 million data records in seconds, with updates every 15 minutes, near real time reporting, and mobile access on the mountain. The project went live exactly on schedule.

Moving around one million visitors each year across more than 40 cable cars and lifts generates vast amounts of data every day, including ticket sales, access records, rides, timestamps, locations, and product information. While the data was available, the existing standard reporting offered only limited analytical capabilities. Reports were highly aggregated, lacked flexibility, and answering ad hoc business questions often required manual work in Excel.

The goal was to replace the existing reporting with a dedicated analytics solution that business users could easily understand, that delivers high performance even with large data volumes, and that enables the team to respond to new reporting requirements more quickly on its own. At the center of the project was one key question: What is happening across the operation, when is it happening, and what decisions can we make based on these insights?

Dachstein Salzkammergut cable cars operate several of the best known mountain and leisure destinations in the Austrian states of Upper Austria and Salzburg, including Dachstein West, Feuerkogel, Grünberg, Dachstein Krippenstein, and Wurbauerkogel. With a wide range of outdoor, sports, and leisure activities, the company delivers memorable visitor experiences throughout the summer and winter seasons, welcoming guests 365 days a year.

The limits of standard reporting: Data without context

The existing reporting solution was based directly on the SKIDATA environment and had reached its limits. Reports were highly aggregated, performance declined as data volumes grew, and users had only limited flexibility to answer specific business questions. Most importantly, the data lacked business context. For example, which season should an admission on a transition day be assigned to? Which ticket categories and visitor groups are behind the numbers? Which locations, time periods, and products are truly relevant? 

The connection between ticket sales and actual usage was also difficult to analyze. Selling a ticket is only part of the picture. Understanding when and where it is actually used is essential for operational planning, pricing decisions, and offer management. Daily and seasonal summaries alone could not provide these insights. Management wanted to base decisions on more detailed data, the controlling team needed faster access to meaningful analyses, and operations required better visibility into daily business as it unfolded.

The solution: A centralized data platform with Qlik Cloud

The goal was not simply to replace one reporting tool with another, but to build a scalable foundation for analytics. BE-terna moved the SKIDATA data beyond the limitations of standard reporting and transformed it into a reusable data and analytics platform. Qlik Cloud serves as the central analytics layer, integrating, cleansing, modeling, and presenting data in a way that is meaningful for different user groups. 

Working closely with the customer, BE-terna developed a centralized data model that connects sales, access, and ride data while enriching it with the business context missing from the original system. This includes season definitions, ticket categories, visitor groups, locations, and time structures. As a result, the platform can now automatically determine, for example, whether an admission on a transition day belongs to the summer season, even if winter tickets are already on sale. 

Built on this foundation, BE-terna delivered applications for management, controlling, and operations, including automated daily reports, detailed analyses down to 15 minute intervals, and a live dashboard. This gives site managers and operations teams near real time visibility into admissions and rides as they happen, complete with hourly trends and year over year comparisons.

The implementation: Working together every step of the way

The project team met weekly, bringing together BE-terna's analytics experts and the core team from Dachstein Salzkammergut cable cars. They worked closely to address detailed questions about the SKIDATA data model, with support from both the customer and the system provider. This collaborative approach resulted in a solution that delivers both high technical performance and reliable, business relevant insights. 

Knowledge transfer was a key part of the implementation. During the Academy phase, the core team gained the skills to understand the platform, evaluate new requirements, and create additional analyses with greater independence. As a result, the project delivered more than a technical solution. It provided the organization with a sustainable analytics platform that became an integral part of day to day operations.

The results: Data driven decisions in seconds

Today, Dachstein Salzkammergut cable cars rely on a centralized, high performance analytics platform that supports everyone from executive management and controlling to site managers and operations teams. Analyses that once required hours of manual work are now available in seconds, covering more than 50 million data records and enabling comparisons across more than five years of historical data. 

The platform also improves day to day decision making. For example, pricing and operational questions, such as evaluating afternoon tickets, can now be answered using data instead of assumptions. Time periods, usage patterns, and year over year comparisons provide the insights needed to make informed decisions. At the same time, the live dashboard supports daily operations by giving teams access to key information on mobile devices, with updates available in near real time.
