Meet Ilaz Rexhepi, Managing Director of BE-terna Sweden

With a background in technology and a strong focus on people, Ilaz has grown from developer to managing director of BE-terna Sweden. We spoke with him about his career journey, his approach to leadership, and why trust, curiosity, and strong relationships matter more than titles.

Can you tell us a little about yourself? Who is Ilaz, both at work and outside of work?

I’m someone who thrives in a fast-paced environment where many things are happening at once, but I also know when structure and focus are needed to move things forward. What motivates me most is people, personal growth, and building strong teams where everyone enjoys working together while delivering high-quality results. As a father of two boys, aged 13 and 8, much of my life outside work revolves around their activities. My oldest practices taekwondo, while my youngest plays football. He even signed me up as a coach for his team without asking me first. I also try to stay active myself and still play football in a local league. When the evenings finally quiet down, I enjoy relaxing with a good TV series or movie. That said, family is what recharges me the most. Watching my children grow and seeing the joy they find in their interests gives me a tremendous amount of energy.

How did your journey lead you to BE-terna and your current role?

I started studying computer engineering at Lund University right after high school because I knew early on that technology was something I wanted to work with. At one point, I took a break from my studies and worked in the transportation sector, which gave me valuable insight into business processes and how technology can be used to support and improve them in practice. When our first child was born, I decided it was time to finish my studies and earn my degree. My first job application was to a small company called Tydab that later became part of BE-terna. I started as a developer and was introduced to the ERP world. It was a challenging start because Microsoft business systems are vast and complex, but thanks to hard work and fantastic colleagues, I developed quickly.

Now, almost ten years later, I’m still here because of the people, the culture, and the constant opportunities for growth.

The journey has been both challenging and rewarding, and I still feel the same drive to continue building the company together with the team.

What does a typical day look like for you?

There really is no typical day, and that’s one of the things I enjoy most. One day might be focused on customers and strategic decisions, while the next revolves around internal discussions, recruitment, or supporting the team in various ways. The variety and pace are a big part of what keeps me motivated.

How do you experience BE-terna’s culture in your daily work?

We have a strong team spirit and a culture where people genuinely support one another. This applies within our teams and in the way we work with customers. Our culture is professional, friendly, and free from unnecessary hierarchy.

What do you think sets BE-terna apart from other consulting companies in tech and business applications?

What sets BE-terna apart is the combination of personal collaboration and shared expertise across the group. We stay close to our customers and take the time to understand their business, their challenges, and the people affected by each project. At the same time, we can draw on colleagues with different industry knowledge, technical skills, and perspectives across countries. This means customers receive personal support from people who understand their local context, backed by the knowledge and capabilities of a larger international organization.

How do you think working at BE-terna will evolve in the coming years?

I believe working at BE-terna will become even more collaborative, international, and technology enabled. AI and automation will become a natural part of everyday work, helping reduce repetitive tasks, make better decisions and spend more of our time creating value for our customers. At the same time, roles and skills will evolve. This will require all of us to stay curious, keep learning and find new ways of working. We will also collaborate more across countries and areas of expertise. This will give our people access to broader knowledge and more opportunities. Even as things change, I believe the foundation will remain the same. Trust in each other, strong relationships, and a culture where people feel empowered to take responsibility, contribute with ideas and grow together.

What is the most important lesson you have learned during your career?

That people and culture are always more important than processes and titles in the long run. The best results come when people enjoy what they do, trust each other, and work toward a shared goal. I’ve also learned that you’re never truly finished learning. Given how quickly technology, AI, and business applications are evolving today, curiosity and a willingness to keep developing are more important than ever. The more experience you gain, the more important it becomes to stay open to new perspectives and change.
