Lünendonk ranking 2022: BE-terna confirms its place in the top 20 mid-size IT consultancies in Germany

3 min read Aug 05, 2022

Lünendonk & Hossenfelder GmbH has published its ranking of the 20 leading medium-sized IT consultancy companies in Germany for 2022. Despite a decline in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and an ongoing skills shortage, these companies recorded average revenue growth of around 16.0% in 2021 (2020: 4.7%), the highest growth since the top 20 list was established in 2017, generating total revenue of EUR 2.8 billion.
With a 12.3% increase in turnover, BE-terna is ranked in 11th place once again, thus consolidating its healthy position among the leading mid-size IT consulting and systems integration companies in Germany.

Challenges for the industry

Over the past year, the increasing shortage of skilled workers has been felt more and more. According to the team at Lünendonk & Hossenfelder, this is having an even greater impact on the business development of IT consultancies in particular, and the tight situation in the IT job market means that the incredibly high demand for IT services can no longer be sufficiently met. As a result, companies are only forecasting average sales growth of 10.6% for 2023.

Gerald Pichler, COO of BE-terna is looking to the future with confidence:

We at BE-terna are inevitably feeling the effects of the global skills shortage in our industry, just like everybody else. However, we are very well positioned to continue growing in all areas. By acquiring SolutionHouse and heldendaten last year, we further expanded our capacity and know-how for the Microsoft Dynamics market and the data analytics market. At the end of 2021, we were also able to add to our service portfolio by acquiring the Swiss company Boydak Automation AG, enabling us to support our customers with process automation as an important means of overcoming the aforementioned skills gap and for automating daily routines.

Forecast: Industry trends for 2022 and 2023

The year 2021 marked the start of the warm-up phase of business model transformations for many companies. Preparations have been focused on optimising and automating internal processes to reduce costs, as well as creating new digital and data-based products, services and business models. Overall, approximately 43% of IT decision-makers in companies do not yet consider their own IT organisation to be optimally aligned with customer and business requirements. Increased investment is needed: for 2023, roughly 78% are planning a significant budget increase for the further development, maintenance and modernisation of the IT landscape in their own company or for process optimisation measures.

Experts are still predicting a sustained boom in the IT services market as a whole, and many companies will continue to intensify their digitisation efforts. The sustained high demand for IT services in the areas of cloud transformation, IT modernisation, data analytics, cyber security, customer experience and software development and implementation forms the basis of the overall positive growth forecast for 2022 and 2023.
