ESG AT BE-terna

ESG: Our roadmap for responsible growth

Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles guide how we create sustainable value at BE-terna. ESG represents our commitment to minimizing environmental impact, promoting social responsibility, and maintaining high governance standards. Learn how we integrate these principles to drive positive change for our customers, communities, and the planet.

Sustainability for a better future

ESG frameworks encompass three primary areas: environmental, social, and governance. Our ESG strategy supports global frameworks like the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and reflects our values of openness, boldness, and trust. We are committed to real actions that promote environmental care, social responsibility, and transparent governance.

Environmental responsibility

Our environmental strategy focuses on minimizing our ecological footprint by aligning our core business activities with measurable sustainability goals. In line with the Paris Agreement, we are preparing to calculate our carbon footprint in 2024 across Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions. This will allow us to define clear targets for reducing our environmental impact. In parallel, we pursue a zero-waste approach in our everyday operations and events by reducing printed materials, promoting digital alternatives, and encouraging reuse, recycling, and longer use of technical equipment.

A key pillar of our approach is implementing cloud-based solutions for our customers. By replacing on-premises systems with scalable cloud services, we help reduce unnecessary energy and resource consumption through optimized infrastructure. This shift supports the development and delivery of sustainable software by promoting code reusability, efficient performance, and responsible AI usage. We also work to educate customers about the environmental benefits of cloud and encourage sustainability efforts among our cloud hosting partners.

Key environmental goals:

  • Carbon footprint measurement: Prepare and execute a full Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions calculation in 2024 to define measurable climate targets.
  • Reduce waste: Align all operations and event management with waste reduction principles based on reuse, reduction, and recycling.
  • Promote sustainable digitalization: Support customers in transitioning to energy-efficient cloud solutions and invest in sustainable software development practices.

Governance

Governance in ESG focuses on corporate structures, policies, transparency, and accountability. This includes board and management structures, company policies and standards, information disclosures, auditing practices, and compliance. Effective governance ensures that a company is well-managed and acts in the best interests of its stakeholders. Unethical practices, such as corruption, conflicts of interest, or misconduct, can severely impact a company’s reputation and its value to shareholders.

Our focus on governance centers around anti-corruption and transparency—operating with openness, honesty, and integrity. Transparency strengthens our credibility with customers, investors, and stakeholders, fostering loyalty, enhancing brand reputation, and supporting sustainable financial performance.

Cybersecurity is a key objective within our governance pillar, as effective management of cybersecurity protects against data breaches and financial risks. Additionally, we prioritize clear, verifiable communication of environmental goals and actions. Consistent, measurable progress reporting builds stakeholder trust and demonstrates accountability.

Key governance goals:

  • Cybersecurity and data protection: Robust practices to safeguard information and uphold stakeholder trust.
  • Transparent business practices: Open, frequent communication of our policies, standards, and ESG progress.
  • Zero tolerance for corruption: Dedicated training, policies, and procedures to maintain ethical integrity.
