Qlik Microsoft Teams Integration: Enhancing Business Intelligence with Conversational Analytics

5 min read Apr 16, 2024

With generative AI increasingly influencing the way we work, we are experiencing a fundamental shift in how we deal with business intelligence (BI) solutions. Qlik has taken a pioneering role here by seamlessly integrating its Insight Advisor into Microsoft Teams. This innovation allows users to interact with their Qlik Sense applications directly in MS Teams without having to log into the Qlik Sense Cloud Hub. This not only makes accessing Qlik easier, but also improves decision-making through quick access to relevant data.

This blog delves into the newly released Qlik conversational analytics capability within Microsoft Teams, highlighting how this integration elevates the user experience. By utilizing the Qlik app for Teams, users can engage in natural language dialogue with Insight Advisor, Qlik's intelligent AI assistant, to generate data visualizations and insights directly within the Teams environment. Qlik's AI responds with tailored analytics drawn from across your Qlik applications, enabling a collaborative, real-time decision-making process. Moreover, with the convenience of the Teams mobile app, Qlik Analytics becomes readily accessible anytime, anywhere, ensuring insights are always at your fingertips for informed decision-making at the point of need.

The first steps towards integration

To benefit from this advanced integration, start by adding the Qlik app to Microsoft Teams in the “Apps” section. Once the app is added, you need to log into your Qlik Cloud tenant. Thanks to support for single sign-on, for example with Azure AD, this step is usually carried out automatically.

Establishing a connection and using the Insight Advisor

Once the connection is established, integration allows you to directly interact with your Qlik Sense applications within Teams, taking your personal authorizations into account. To use Insight Advisor for your applications, make sure that the “Insight Advisor on Hub” slider is activated.

Qlik offers automatic suggestions based on the master items of your applications, but also supports the use of other terms for a comprehensive analysis.

Interactive examples and advanced functions

One practical example is the connection to an extensive movies database, which contains information on a large number of films including votes, running time, the director and actors.

Exploring data: The “Show Measures” command can be used to display the most important key figures. Clicking on “# Movies”, for example, displays the number of films in your data source.  undefined

More in-depth analysis: For more detailed insights, you can make inquiries such as “Revenue by Decade” to obtain a bar chart with the revenue distribution. Qlik not only generates diagrams, but also explains the results in plain language and points out data quality problems.

We are told that the 2010s account for 40.1% of total sales, while 313 million sales have not been maintained for a decade. So this also indicates a data quality problem.

You can use the “Explore this further” button to expand your analysis in the Qlik online dashboard.

Use “Add to Sheet” to create new worksheets for future analyses if you want to transfer these analyses to the standard application in the future. You can also interact with the Insight Advisor directly here.

Advanced interactions and customization

Set specific filters using queries such as “movie titles by director George Lucas” to personalize the interaction with your data. Qlik automatically recognizes the request to set a filter in the “Director” area and provides the corresponding information.

You could also change the request from before to “Revenue by decade by Director George Lucas”. The chart is filtered accordingly, which is always confirmed in italics with "Filters: Director: George Lucas".

How smart can the Insight Advisor get?

Qlik has been providing a “Logical model” and a “Vocabulary” for each Qlik Sense application for several versions. To get the most out of the Insight Advisor, you can add typical terms to your vocabulary, such as “best films” that have lots of “votes”. This makes searching and analyzing significantly easier.

For example, if I want to make the “best films” with lots of “votes” easily searchable, I could add the following terms in several languages to my vocabulary:

undefined

This makes it easy to pick a film for movie night, for example with the query “hottest movie titles with many votes”.

undefined

From here, you could jump back into the Qlik Sense app and select “Genre=Fantasy” for Avatar. Here’s to a cozy movie night!

Conclusion and future direction

The integration of Qlik Sense into Microsoft Teams is now available for all customers with a Qlik Cloud Tenant and opens up exciting possibilities for data exploration directly from Teams. Although the interaction is not yet as seamless as with other AI tools, a targeted investment in business logic (vocabulary and logical model) allows it to be used effectively. The future significance of generative AI in our everyday working lives is promising, and the technical foundations for innovative working methods have already been laid. The coming months and years will reveal how this approach will work out. At the moment, we are still in the early adopter phase, which is why it is important to invest in the data literacy of our employees.
