Meet Janis – Tech Enthusiast, Disc Golfer, and Harmonica Player

3 min read Jun 05, 2025

Janis lives with his partner and two cats on a countryside property between Ängelholm and Åstorp. After returning from Thailand ten years ago—where he lived on and off for nearly a decade following a two-year backpacking trip through Asia—he has settled down in Skåne. He enjoys the tranquility and the space that comes with it.

Three Words That Describe You?

Stubborn, tech-savvy, curious.

What Do You Do in Your Free Time?

I’m into all-around frisbee, especially disc golf. I enjoy board games and 3D printing. Recently, I joined a band where I play harmonica and occasionally sing—it's a lot of fun!

Role at BE-terna

What Does a Solution Engineer Actually Do?

No two days are the same as a Solution Engineer—there’s a lot of variety. When I’m deep into a project, that’s my main focus: development, customization, and problem-solving. Between projects, I handle a mix of tasks, often involving clients I haven’t worked with before. That means I need to be flexible and quick to grasp new situations.

We have daily stand-ups to check in with each other, and every Friday, the development team meets for a casual digital hangout—no work talk, just socializing.

How Did You Get Into This Field?

I started out in IT but stepped away around 2001. After a few years working in municipal IT support, I wanted to get back into programming. I saw a job ad from Tydab back then, but the timing wasn’t right. Instead, I went through a vocational training program and did my internship at Tydab, which led directly to a job after graduation.

What Does It Take to Succeed in Your Role?

Curiosity and the willingness to ask for help are key. The systems are large and complex—no one is expected to know everything. Persistence is a huge plus, especially when debugging or learning something new. But it’s also important to know when to step back and ask for support. A strong command of English is essential, since all documentation is in English. It also helps to be really good at Googling—many problems can be solved if you know how to search effectively.

Working at BE-terna

What Attracted You to the Company?

I joined Tydab shortly before we became part of BE-terna. Since the merger, it’s been clear that we’re now part of something bigger. We have access to more resources and can take on larger, more complex projects. It’s also opened the door to international collaboration. I’ve worked with colleagues from Croatia, Serbia, Denmark, and Norway—it's both inspiring and educational.

What’s the Culture Like?

Open, forgiving, and compassionate. We believe work should be fun.

What’s the Best Thing About Working Here?

Definitely the colleagues. And I really appreciate the variety in my work tasks.

How Do You See Growth Opportunities?

There’s always more to learn as a developer—Power Platform, Azure, AI… it never ends.

How Do You Experience the Leadership and Support From the Organization?

I find the leadership to be very approachable and supportive. It’s easy to reach out to managers if you need to talk. The culture is genuinely understanding, even when mistakes happen.

One memory that stands out from my early days is when I accidentally lost almost a week’s worth of work. I was worried, but everyone responded with support and understanding—no anger, no blame. It was honestly moving how supportive the team was.

Lastly…

What Would You Say to Someone Considering Joining BE-terna?

Go for it! If you enjoy problem-solving, supportive colleagues, and flexibility—then BE-terna is the right place for you.
